Love Isn't Love Anymore
Yesterday
was Valentine’s Day, wasn’t it?
What
did I do on this beautiful day? Did I celebrate this day with my non-existent lover?
Did I go on double-dates, by any chance?
Hmm…
here was how my Valentine’s Day went:
I
woke up. I breathed in oxygen and let out carbon dioxide to help the plants in
the photosynthesis process. I went to my school. I conversed with people other
than my non-existent boyfriend. I went back home. I breathed in more oxygen and
let out more carbon dioxide out of my nostrils.
Yes,
my day was very eventful, wasn’t it?
Honestly
speaking, I don’t like the concept of singling out one day out of
three-sixty-five day as a dedication to love. What’s so great about fourteenth
February, honestly? Why is everything so red? Why are there stupid hearts,
stupid roses and stupid couples everywhere?
And those who don't have 'valentines' spent the entire day moping about, thinking that they're losers 'cause they didn't find someone to spend Valentine's Day with! Isn't that quite a negative way to spend your day? You could be doing a lot of things with your friends and families, you could curl up and read a nice, fat book or watch a nice, tragic romance (like I watched Titanic because it's one of my favourite movies.)!
Wherever I looked yesterday, there’s a supposedly lovey-dovey couple. They talk to each other, the
guy’s arm wrapped around the girl’s shoulder. They’re goofy, they’re trying to
blush as their friends are calling out – girls are cooing and guys are
wolf-whistling. The small crowd's attention is on them, the couple!
It’s
almost as if the entire thing is staged. As if, having a boyfriend or a
girlfriend is equal to a huge rise in the popularity ladder.
Yes,
that’s what love has become – a
symbol of status.
That’s
what all the celebrities do, these days. A famous Hollywood hunk/director is in a
“relationship” with a starlet with sharp, defined features and a lovely figure.
There’s no real love. The director wants his movies to make money. The starlet
wants to achieve recognition.
It’s
just a selfish game! You show that you’re a couple but there’s no real love
within. There’s no excitement, there’s nothing! It’s just a pair of two people
acting according to the norms of society
just to survive!
It’s
pretty bullshit-y. But it’s true.
I’m
just a sixteen-year-old girl. I don’t know about a lot of things. I don’t have
a clue as to what the hell is going on with my country’s politics. I don’t know
how to apply makeup properly (except to apply kohl around my eyes) and I spend
hours reading and watching TV shows.
But
I’m pretty sure I know that love isn’t love
anymore.
Love
isn’t like how they describe in those sappy 90’s movies. It’s not like how it
happened in Titanic – Rose falling hopelessly in love with charming (though
poor) Jack Dawson. It’s not like how it happened in DDLJ.
It’s
either one-sided, like poor Jay Gatsby who fell for that selfish bitch – or
it’s a two-sided benefits thing, which is more in common now-a-days.
Why
celebrate the day of love in a world that is so loveless?
Additionally,
there are a bunch of days preceding and succeeding Valentine’s day – like, Kiss
Day, Hug Day, Teddy Day and Breakup Day –
Breakup
Day! Breakup Day!
You
have a freaking day to BREAK UP!
The
whole institution of love has been trivialized into a set of days –
particularly one day – and most people just go along with it!
These
days, I don’t even think anyone really knows the meaning of the word love.
People
often associate love with romance although both of them are completely
different. Romance is a form of love.
Love
is a broader term. To a naïve sixteen-year-old like me, love is like this
strong, positive emotion that you feel towards a bunch of people you like a
lot. It’s all about those special people – to make them happy, to protect them,
to be there for them when they are not feeling good about themselves. It’s all
about giving, not taking!
Now-a-days,
I just feel that love’s vanished. That kind of magic is not there.
And
that’s what makes me all the more upset.
Love
isn’t love anymore.
I agree with you there...... That's quite a good observation..... I know I'm late for this but still.....
ReplyDeleteThe other day (non valentine's day) I was roaming around the park at 7 PM, no wrong intentions, I was going somewhere taking a short cut through the park, I could only see couple there. The guy sprawled out and the girl sticking close to him. Suddenly, a girl gets up and move towards the gate with a ringing phone. She goes out and starts talking in a muffled voice. I HAPPENED to pass by her only to hear that she was talking to another one of her boyfriends....... Isn't that cheap...?
Nowadays, having a boyfriend or a girlfriend has only become a social status. Updating on Facebook that you're in a relationship so that people respect you....... I don't see the point.....
Love isn't love anymore
Yours truly,
Shadow
