Celebrating Women – A Women’s History Month Initiative
Last year, my best friend from the fellowship was doing an independent study – to trace the history of women in her family.
While researching, she came across a couple of vintage family group photographs of the pre-Partition era. And she noticed something odd:
Beneath those photographs, there were names of only the male members.
No. Female. Names.
Struck by this, I remember her tell me, how the lives of men were documented so well and the women of the yore weren’t even worth a mention.
A year later, I decided to do some digging of my own ancestry.
As I come from a matriarchal community, I thought I’d be luckier and I could find more about my female ancestors.
To a major extent, all thanks to my maternal granduncle, I was able to trace back my ancestry up to my grandmother’s great-grandmother.
Yet, when I tried tracing further, right down to my ancestral roots, you know what happened?
I came across one potential ancestor, who was a guy.
It’s odd, isn’t it?
I come from a matriarchy and there’s no mention of a woman beyond my grandmother’s great-grandmother. But there’s a warrior guy, who could potentially be our ancestor.
Isn’t it weird how little we know of women’s histories?
Which is why, I decided:
For this March, also known as the Women’s History Month, I have decided to Celebrate Women
.
I will talk about the legacy of women across the world and their stories. I want to highlight their stories and the messages their lives hold for us.
If you want, you can join me too!
All you have to do is:
- Post a picture on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter OR write a blog post about women you’d like to talk about. These women could be famous or ones in your family/friends circle.
- Tell why you love those women and one key quality that they had you were inspired by
- Nominate 5-10 people to do the same!
Hope to see you be a part of this experience!
Stay awesome as ever,
Much love,
Archie <3
