A La Agatha

A La Agatha is a melodramatic piece, but melodramatic is what we all are, at the end of the day.

Sometimes, I wonder,
How you’d feel,
If at all I vanished,
With no clue, no sleuth at my heel;

Sometimes, I wonder,
How you’d feel,
If I disappeared,
A la Agatha;

Would you be languishing,
In regretful agony?
Or be overwhelmed,
With the delight to be at last free?

Or would you be haunted,
By ghosts of remorse for wronging me?
Or would you be,
Sighing in relief, ‘Good riddance, indeed!’

The Archie of my life,
Would you really care,
To know the torture
I feel, like being pierced by a cruel knife?

If I just took off,
In careless grace,
With no signal, no trace –
Would you feel –

Regret’s sharp stabbing pain,
Cascading like a storm of unending rain?
Would you be led astray,
On knowing how you got betrayed?

The Archie of my life I know,
Wouldn’t give a damn,
What difference does it make so,
If I stayed or left?

If I run away,
Take on a new name,
And cruelly frame,
You for wronging me;

People will, for sure, see,
Me as the melodramatic soul,
Ruining the repute of an ‘esteemed’ gentleman?
For darling, aren’t they all your biggest fans?

Alas, as much as I want to, I can’t be,
A la Agatha,
Breaking away from the shackles,
Of being unloved, day in and day out;

A MINI RANT FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO KNOW:

This is inspired by Agatha Christie's legendary disappearance, nearly a hundred years ago, after she ran away post a fight with her philandering husband, Archibald 'Archie' Christie.

The narrator of this poem finds herself in a very powerless position, kinda like how Agatha did, when she found out her husband was cheating on her. And so, the narrator contemplates whether she can pull off a disappearing act like Agatha did and whether she can get away with it, unscathed.

Unlike Agatha, who did get a lot of flak.

Regardless of our relationship statuses is at the moment - we've all been there. Where we want to get away from reality because it hurts a little too much and the ones we love deeply don't care at all.

While I didn't have any real-life reference when I wrote this poem and I only wrote it inspired by Agatha's story, I've been told by some of my closest friends and family members that they really connected with this narrative. Because their exes and current S/Os have left them with that feeling of disorientation.

And that's... really sad.

Dear reader, I do hope you like it. But I also hope that you don't relate to it a little too much, because nobody deserves that kind of anguish that poor Agatha Christie went through.

Every woman needs a Max Mallowan, and not an Archibald Christie.

(If you don't get that reference, just go to Agatha's Wikipedia page!)

Stay awesome as ever,

Much love,

Archie (NOT Christie! xD) <3
